Base & Acids (Exclusively in Bath Bombs)

 Bicarbonate of Soda:

Sodium bicarbonate (NaHCO3), also known as baking soda, is a very versatile, soluble, white powder. It is found in bath products to help them dissolve evenly in the water, in deodorants to absorb sweat, and in toothpastes and mouthwashes to cleanse and refresh.

It is an alkaline chemical compound that occurs naturally in a substance called natron. Natron is a natural deposit that forms in salt lake beds. However, most of the global production of sodium bicarbonate is achieved through a method called the “Solvay process” which involves mixing salt, limestone and ammonia. Teyes Eye uses the organic and natural form of sodium bicarbonate for its products.

Sodium bicarbonate is a key ingredient in our bath bombs, the powder is mixed with citric acid and coconut oil to create a hard moisturising base that dissolves and fizzes when plunged into hot water, helping to diffuse colours and essential oils. It also has a softening effect on hard water.

·         Citric Acid

Citric acid is a white, odourless crystalline powder, which naturally occurs in citrus fruits. Combined with sodium bicarbonate, it creates a fizzy and bubbly effect in water.

Natural citric acid and sodium bicarbonate are the key components of our revitalising bath bombs which also have organic essential oils and coconut oil. When added to the water, the mixture creates carbon dioxide and causes a bubbling, fizzing action. To give some life and therapeutic effects to our bath bombs, natural organic colours, essential oils, are added. As they break down in the water, the effect of the essential oils is heightened.

Alchemists were aware of the acid as early as 700AD. It was first isolated in 1784 (from crystallized lemon juice) by a Swedish chemist, Carl Wilhelm Scheele. Citric acid is a naturally occurring fruit acid. In lemons and limes, it can account for up to 8% of the dry weight and has a very acidic taste.
